Kanye Omari West was born on June 8, 1977 and it did not take long for his family to realize that he was destined for great things. He was rapping by the time he was in the third grade and he has not stopped since. In fact, he is not only a rapper/singer but he is a song writer, film director, record producer, fashion designer and an entrepreneur. His production career began in the mid-90s where he was making beats for local artists and his first official production credits came when he was 19. Since hitting the big time he has sold over 21 million albums and in the United States alone he has sold over 66 million digital downloads. Combine that with the fact that six of his songs have sold more than three million downloads each makes him one of the best-selling artists of all time as far as digital downloads go. Is it any wonder that people expect him to continue seeing success in 2018?

9. Jason Derulo

He was born Jason Joel Desrouleaux on September 21, 1989. He is an American dancer and singer/songwriter. His career began by him writing songs for many other artists that include names such as Pitbull, Cassie, Lil Wayne and more. His vocal abilities were noticed when he wrote and made a guest appearance on the song “Bossy” for rapper Birdman. His third album titled “Tattoos” was released on September 24, 2013 which is going on a world tour in 2018 where he will be headlining the show.

8. Justin Timberlake

Justin Randall Timberlake joined his family on January 31, 1981 in Memphis, Tennessee and has since proven himself as a singer/songwriter, actor, businessman, philanthropist and record producer. His early life saw him on television shows such as Star Search and the Mickey Mouse Club and by late 1990s he became one of two lead vocalists within the band ‘N Sync. He began working on his third album in 2012, “The 20/20 Experience” and the follow up album “The 20/20 Experience-2 of 2 and the first single from it “Take Back the Night” was released on July 12, 2013. 7. Macklemore

On June 19, 1983 Ben Haggerty joined the world and a star was born. He is a rapper who independently released one mixtape, three EPs and two albums in 2000 which were collaborated with producer Ryan Lewis. This duo is known mostly for their single “Thrift Shop” which reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2013. At that point they were the first to have a song reach that high on the charts without a major label backing them since 1994. The two were nominated for seven Grammys at the 56th Grammy Awards and they won four awards which included Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song, Best New Artist, and Best Rap Performance.

6. Eminem

Marshall Bruce Mathers III was born on October 17, 1972 though his fans know him better as Slim Shady or Eminem. He is one of the world’s best-selling music artists of the 2000s and been named by many magazines as the as one of the greatest artists of all time. Rolling Stone Magazine placed him at 82 on their list of The Greatest Artists of All Time and dubbed him the King of Hip Hop. Not only does he have solo success but he is also a part of the group D12 and a duo partner in the group Bad Meets Evil. His first album Infinite was released in 1996.

5. Justin Bieber

He was born Justin Drew Bieber on March 1, 1994 in Canada and was discovered by an American talent manager in 2008, Scooter Braun. He found Bieber’s videos on YouTube and later became his manager. His extended play album “My World” with seven tracks was released in November 2009 and became certified platinum in the US. He then became the first artist to have seven songs off a debut record chart on the Billboard Hot 100. In March 2010 the second album “My World 2.0 debuted at or near the number one spot in several countries and instantly became certified Platinum in the United States. His third album “Believe” also had instant success when it released on June 19, 2012 when it debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Not too bad for someone who hid his interest in music while teaching himself to play the drums, piano, trumpet and guitar while growing up.

4. Chris Brown

Christopher Maurice “Chris” Brown is an American dancer, actor and recording artist who was born on May 5, 1989. He taught himself to dance and sing at a young age and became involved with the church choir and participated in several talent shows in his hometown of Tappahannock, Virginia. In 2004 he signed with Jive Records and released a self-titled album which reached number two on the Billboard 200. He is the first male artist since Diddy in 1997 to reach the top of the charts on a debut single which was titled, “Run It”. Not only is he still singing but he has also been pursuing an acting career since 2007 with his latest being “Battle of the Year in 2013.

3. Pitbull

This Cuban American recording artist and Latin Grammy winning rapper from Miami, Florida was born Armando Christian Perez on January 15, 1981. His first album released in 2004 and it was titled, “M.I.A.M.I” which stood for Money is a Major Issue. The album included a production from producers such as Lil Jon and Jim Jonsin. By October 2013 he has reached number one many times and his EP album Meltdown was a global hit that reached number one in many countries as well as number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and in the UK bringing him to twenty number ones worldwide.

2. Drake

Aubrey Drake Graham was born on October 24, 1986 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He is a Canadian recording artist, songwriter, rapper, and actor and he got his start on Degrassi: The Next Generation when he played the role of Jimmy Brooks. Later in June 2009, the rest of the world learned to love him as a rapper when he released several mixtapes including Room for Improvement before signing up with Lil Wayne’s Young Money Entertainment. He has just released his third studio album which released on the night of the 55th Grammy Awards during which he won the award for Best Rap Album. On January 19, 2014 he made his hosting debut on Saturday Night Live.

The number one slot is filled by Peter Gene Hernandez who was born on October 8, 1985. He began making music early in his life and performed often in many musical venues in Honolulu, Hawaii where he was born and raised. It should not be a surprise considering his family’s musical background but as soon as he graduated from high school he moved to Los Angeles to try and make a name for his himself as a musician by first co-founding a production team known as The Smeezingtons. His first attempt at fame was under the label Motown Records and it was unsuccessful. Then he signed with Atlantic in 2009 and the world noticed him when he lent his vocal talent to songs like “Billionaire” by Travie McCoy and “Nothin’ on You” by B.o.B. He has since become one of the fastest growing male singers since Elvis Presley and in 2018 he ranked number one on the Forbes list of 30 under 30. He has also won two Grammys.
